Why group therapy?
You are not alone in your struggles. Often, we can’t imagine that someone else is dealing with the same issues. Members in group therapy will share their experiences and provide both moral and emotional support to one another. In group therapy, you gain several perspectives, encouragement, and feedback in a confidential and safe environment. Group therapy reduces isolation and helps improve social and communication skills. You learn about yourself and how you interact with others. Exposure to people with different personalities and backgrounds allows us to see how others handle problems and make healthy changes. An important note is that group therapy is not self-help or a support group.
What is the difference between process group and psychoeducational group?
Psychoeducational groups provide information about specific issues and may teach healthy coping skills. Groups are led by a trained therapist and the therapist takes on a role as teacher and facilitator. Information provided can lead to group discussions but also allows members to utilize skills or information learned outside of the group setting.
Process groups provide group members the opportunity to engage in group discussions and focus on the group experience. As with psychoeducational groups, process groups are lead by a trained therapist who acts as a facilitator. The focus is not on the facilitator but the group. Focus is placed on members’ feelings, thinking, and behavioral skills. Sharing in process group environments provides a sense of belonging and an increase in self-confidence.
What are open groups and closed groups?
Open groups are groups in which new members can join any time. Closed groups are groups in which all members join at the same time. Currently, we only offer closed groups.
How large are the groups?
Our groups are 3-5 people.
Do I need more than group therapy?
Everyone has different needs. Not everyone that attends group therapy will need individual therapy. Some people see both as additional support.
